Grand Opening of Georg Hornemann in Berlin

On the 19th of November 2016, the renowned jewellery artist Georg Hornemann will be opening up the new Berlin location just off Kurfürstendamm. The new location will be in the Bel-Étage on Schlüterstraße 45 and will feature an impressive installation by floral artist Thierry Boutemy.

Georg Hornemann is one of the most acclaimed contemporary goldsmiths and jewellery designers and has been internationally renowned for his unusual creations for more than 50 years. The company was founded in 1973 by Georg Hornemann. Father and son Alexander have been working closely together for over 30 years. Georg Hornemann is regarded as an artist among jewellery designers and has won almost every international award for outstanding jewellery design since the late 1960s. With his seemingly inexhaustible creative drive, Hornemann has long influenced and shaped European jewellery design. His complex oeuvre consists of haute joaillerie and objets d'art and is inspired by architecture, fashion, art and nature, thus transcending the conventional perception of the traditional goldsmith's craft.

The works by Hornemann combine traditional craftsmanship with the latest techniques. Diamonds or precious stones are combined with materials such as gold, silver, platinum, bronze, iron, and even Corian or acrylic glass to create unique or limited-edition pieces for their customers.

In recent years, Hornemann has hosted many thematic presentations, participated at various art and design fairs and was exhibited at gallery and museum shows including the Lehmbruck Museum and the Cologne Museum of Applied Art. Collaborations with various artists over the years, including the likes of Kris Martin, Rita McBride, and Alicja Kwade, has positioned the Hornemann ever closer to the arts.

In response to this changing programme, the studio sought out new premises in Berlin and found them in a lovingly restored Art Nouveau house from 1911 located on Schlüterstraße 45. The building has an inspiring and eventful history and was once a key social rendezvous for Berlin's cultural life, a tradition that the company is keen on following. In addition to the Düsseldorf location, the new Berlin studio combines showroom, salon, design studio and workshop where the artistically exceptional, flawlessly crafted jewellery and objects will be displayed even more effectively in an exciting series of changing exhibitions that will focus on the unique nature of this creative art. The new space of almost 400 square meters will play an integral part as will the opportunity to realise projects and exhibitions with artists working in other genres.

Opening exhibition

To mark the opening of the new Berlin studio, about fifty exceptional pieces created by the Georg Hornemann will be on display on the 19th of November 2016. Many of these pieces are award-winning, museum-quality masterpieces, mostly one-of-a-kind and partly from private collections. Together they represent the pinnacle of Hornemann's work over the past fifty years. On display will be the so called ring sculptures, earrings, necklaces, bowls, and other exceptional pieces that are widely inspired by nature. The exhibition is set out to be a “tour de force” of what is possible in contemporary jewellery making, pushing every boundary and all conventions.

Collaboration with Thierry Boutemy

The opening exhibition in Berlin is being realised together with Thierry Boutemy. Born in France and now based in Belgium, Boutemy gained global recognition for his floral arrangement's in Sofia Coppola's film "Marie Antoinette" and is considered an artist among florists. He takes rare flowers, moss, and twigs to create stunning decorative pieces for art galleries such as Barbara Gladstone (Brussels) and many fashion defilés such as Dries van Noten or Lanvin.

Georg Hornemann and Thierry Boutemy are both magicians and poets in their respective disciplines, sharing an enthusiasm for worlds of fantasy and imaginatively realising their visions and creations.

The floral installation Boutemy is creating for the exhibition will be, as nature intended, an ephemeral creation and will be created through shared artistic exploration. Boutemy's work will reference the pieces by Hornemann on display and expand the viewer's perspective into a mystical and magical cabinet of the unusual and delightful.
